SEEK WEEK in Review: God Isn’t Enough

Two weeks ago, my church commenced its annual autumn tradition. It’s called “Seek Week,” a week-long “festival” of fasting and, well, seeking God. Seeing ROCKHARBOR’s five Orange County campuses unite at one location for five consecutive nights was such fantastic foreshadowing for the future: people of all churches, all nations, all cultures, all ages and eras uniting in passion and purpose. I’m so glad I finally got to take part in this year’s Seek Week. I fasted and focused on God in ways […]

SEEK WEEK! A Personal Request for Prayer

It’s been a fun few weeks here. After exhaustedly publishing a book in the spring and otherwise going crazy this summer (a couple of good crazies), it’s been awesome rekindling a blogging fire with my recent Strengths Finder series. I’ve also just redesigned my blog, and personally, I’m more enthusiastic about this blogging space than I’ve ever been. Naturally, then, this represents an ideal stopping point to briefly break from blogging. Allow my sarcastic self to explain. Truthfully, I have a million […]

INTELLECTION: My #1 “Strengths Finder” Strength

This is the first in a five-part series on Strengths Finder, a fantastic resource from Gallup that helps people realize their strengths. Our culture seems obsessed on exposing our flaws and weaknesses and how we can “improve” by altering or even reversing those traits. But Strengths Finder is all about uncovering your innate strengths and building those virtues. Today starts my five-part journey toward doing just that. A few weeks ago, if you were to have asked me about my #1 strength […]

Homeless Hope in an Alleyway

“Hey, were you guys just praying?” I turn from my four church friends to a man – a young man – with blonde hair. He’s a couple years younger than me — a veritable kid with studded earrings. He dons a red sweatshirt emblazoned with the acronym of a local university. “Yes,” we confirm to him. We were praying. Praying over one of our own in a downtown alleyway just outside the restaurant where we’d spent the last two hours. […]

Stop Praying for Others

Prayer is powerful. Praying for someone can be a powerful tool we have as struggling fallen humans. We see others entering rough horrid phases, and we pray. We pray, we pray, we pray. Stop. Stop praying, and start doing. Prayer can be paradoxical in many ways. Our intentions are good. We pray that God ministers to someone, but what if we’ve got it backwards? What if God wants to use us as the ministers? We see someone struggling with loneliness, […]

My YouthWorks Summer: Week 5

This is the sixth of ten blogging installments from my life-changing summer in Milwaukee. In this recap I review my fifth week of programming, which aligned with the special week of July 4th. Be sure to check out my postscript thoughts at the end! A logical place for such thoughts. If you’ve missed any of previous recaps, flash back to Week 0. Also, check out what a camera crew produced when they visited our site during Week 9. *** I […]
